K2

Syllabus section 2.2.1

4 original PrepBench practice questions for learning objective 2.2.1 of the CTFL 4.0 syllabus. Try the examples below and check each answer against its syllabus reference.

Practice questions

Question 1

A team has already tested two internal modules of the same application in isolation, and now tests the interfaces and interactions between them. Which test level is this?

  1. Component testing
  2. Component integration testing
  3. System testing
  4. System integration testing
Show answer
  • Component testingComponent testing focuses on components in isolation, which has already been completed here.
  • Correct answer: Component integration testingThe interfaces and interactions between components are component integration testing.
  • System testingSystem testing addresses the overall behavior and capabilities of an entire system or product.
  • System integration testingSystem integration testing concerns interfaces with other systems and external services.

Component integration testing focuses on testing the interfaces and interactions between components. Component testing focuses on components in isolation, which the team has already done; system testing addresses the overall behavior and capabilities of an entire system; and system integration testing concerns the interfaces between the system under test and other systems and external services, not two modules inside one application.

Question 2

A bank's new system needs two separate approvals before go-live: it must satisfy the terms agreed with the outsourcing supplier, and it must satisfy the rules of the national banking authority. Which two forms of acceptance testing are these?

  1. User acceptance testing and operational acceptance testing
  2. Operational acceptance testing and regulatory acceptance testing
  3. Contractual acceptance testing and user acceptance testing
  4. Contractual acceptance testing and regulatory acceptance testing
Show answer
  • User acceptance testing and operational acceptance testingNeither form addresses a supplier contract or an authority's rules.
  • Operational acceptance testing and regulatory acceptance testingRegulatory covers the authority, but operational does not cover the contract.
  • Contractual acceptance testing and user acceptance testingContractual covers the supplier, but user acceptance does not cover the authority.
  • Correct answer: Contractual acceptance testing and regulatory acceptance testingContractual for the agreed terms, regulatory for the authority's rules.

The main forms of acceptance testing named in the syllabus are user acceptance testing, operational acceptance testing, contractual acceptance testing, regulatory acceptance testing, alpha testing and beta testing. Terms agreed with a supplier are contractual; rules laid down by an authority are regulatory.

Question 3

A team is deciding which test level a planned activity belongs to. The activity checks that the system as a whole fulfils the users' business needs and is ready to be deployed. Which level is it, and what is that level's focus?

  1. Acceptance testing, whose focus is validation and demonstrating readiness for deployment
  2. System testing, whose focus is validation and demonstrating readiness for deployment
  3. Acceptance testing, whose focus is the overall behavior and capabilities of an entire system
  4. System testing, whose focus is the interfaces between the system and other systems
Show answer
  • Correct answer: Acceptance testing, whose focus is validation and demonstrating readiness for deploymentThe level is acceptance testing and that is the focus the syllabus gives it.
  • System testing, whose focus is validation and demonstrating readiness for deploymentThe focus is right but belongs to acceptance testing, not to system testing.
  • Acceptance testing, whose focus is the overall behavior and capabilities of an entire systemThe level is right but that focus belongs to system testing.
  • System testing, whose focus is the interfaces between the system and other systemsNeither part fits: that focus belongs to system integration testing.

Acceptance testing focuses on validation and on demonstrating readiness for deployment, which means that the system fulfills the user's business needs, and ideally it is performed by the intended users. System testing focuses instead on the overall behavior and capabilities of an entire system or product, and system integration testing on the interfaces with other systems and external services.
